Ferrara, Renaissance Town
The beautiful Renaissance city of Ferrara is close to Bologna, mid-way between Venice and Florence, yet it is relatively unknown to tourists. Shaped over the centuries by the River Po, Ferrara was one of the famous centres of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Today, the well-preserved city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can ride a bike to piazza to enjoy a gelato, walk the city walls, and visit Ferrara's outstanding museums. The city is safe, clean and accessible, with a friendly, small-town feel.
With a wide choice of local D.O.C. wines, breads and delicacies including cappellacci di zucca (pumpkin-filled pasta) and salama da sugo (an aged pork sausage), together with a full agenda of art exhibits, gastronomic fairs, music festivals, and traditional events like the annual Palio horse race, Ferrara is an important cultural center and a perfect tourist destination and base for visitors to the north of Italy.
